Menopause

Menopause is another common problem that affects millions of women. Menopausal syndrome include any or all the following symptoms: irritability, depression, hot flashes, insomnia, night sweats, abdominal discomfort, acid reflux, bloating sensation, etc. Of course, osteoporosis is one of the most serious problems and all of these symptoms deserve proper treatment. Usually, calcium supplements are recommended for post-menopausal women. Hormonal replacement therapy has been used for vasomotor symptoms, such as night sweats and hot flashes.

Unfortunately for women depending on hormones to suppress the worst of their symptoms, recent clinical research has reported an unfavorable association between the use of hormone replacement therapy and an increased risk of cancer and heart disease in menopausal women. There findings require further investigation; however, the information has already prompted patients and their physicians to seek other alternatives.

In Chinese medicine, using acupuncture or herbal supplements either separately or in combination, has provided satisfactory results in treating menopausal syndrome. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine theory, menopause is a result of decreased Kidney essence and deficiency of Liver Blood. Acupuncture and herbal supplements can help the body to restore its natural function, without the use of hormones. This could be an important alternative for those who are not comfortable with hormonal replacement therapy, or those who cannot take hormonal therapy because of a cancer.
